American author Toni Morrison, the first black woman of any nationality to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, has died at the age of 88, her publisher confirmed Tuesday.
"We are profoundly sad to report that Toni Morrison has died at the age of eighty-eight," her publisher, Knopf, wrote on Twitter.
Morrison, born Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award in 1988 for her novel, "Beloved," which was later adapted into a film of the same name starring Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover in 1998.
