Obituary
SOMERSET, MA—John P. Sheppard, 76, a longtime resident of Wellesley, and more recently of Somerset, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2020 in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Brighton. He was the husband of Jeanne M. (Dunn) Sheppard for nearly 52 years.
Born in Boston, a son of the late Harold Sheppard and the late Elizabeth (Leblanc) Sheppard, he grew up in Brighton and graduated from Brighton schools, later completing a bachelor’s degree at Northeastern University in 1972. He worked more than 40 years for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game, retiring recently as Director of the Office of Fishing and Boating Access.
Above all he was devoted to his family, and over the years passed along his avid enjoyment of the outdoors to his children.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, John J. Sheppard and his wife Jennifer of Tiverton, and Joseph P. Sheppard of New Jersey; two daughters, Patricia J. Sheppard of Brighton and Eileen M. Sheppard of Brattleboro, VT; a granddaughter Tabitha; and two sisters-in-law, Joanne Sheppard of Wellesley and Cathy Sheppard of Sandwich. He was also preceded in death by two brothers Thomas W. and James F. Sheppard.
His funeral will be held Friday, March 13, 2020 at 9 AM from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA 02726, with a 10 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s Church, South St., Somerset. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Somerset. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours Thursday, March 12, 5-8 PM.
