70 dead after gas cylinder explosion sparks fire on Pakistan train

(CNN)At least 70 people have died after a gas canister exploded in a train in Pakistan, authorities said. 

The train was passing through the Punjab city of Rahim Yar Khan on Thursday morning when the cylinder exploded, causing a fire which spread through the train, according to local police officer Amir Taimoor.

Seventy people are dead and another 30 are injured, said Nadeem Zia, the medical supervisor of District Headquarters Hospital in Liaquatpur, a city in Rahim Yar Khan district.

Earlier, Taimoor said that around a dozen people were critically injured. Army troops, paramedics, and an army aviation helicopter are currently on site.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Arif Alvi have both shared their condolences for the victims' families on social media.

Khan said that he had ordered the launch of an immediate inquiry to be "completed on an urgent basis."

President Alvi "expressed profound grief on the loss of precious lives in the tragic blast caused by gas cylinder," in a statement released on his official Twitter account.

Although gas cylinders are banned on trains, passengers were using gas-powered cookers to prepare breakfast inside the train carriage when the explosion occurred, Taimoor added. 

He added that many of the people on board the train were heading to a protest in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, about 800 kilometers (500 miles) from Rahim Yar Khan.

Rotary eyes polio eradication

BRATTLEBORO — Rick Manganello, a member of Rotary Club of Nashua, N.H. for 22 years and past governor of a regional Rotary district, remembers parents being "petrified" about polio before vaccinations came out.

"Early in the 60s, polio was eradicated from the United States and we began to forget about it,=330/33,420/42" he said last week in an interview on "Rotary Cares" on Brattleboro Community Television. "Other countries were not so fortunate."

Polio is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease known to mostly affect children under the age of 5, according to a Rotary International document. Poliovirus invades a person's nervous system and can cause complete paralysis within hours.

Vaccines can prevent polio. Manganello said in 1985, Rotary International "promised the children of the world that we would eradicate it from the entire planet."

"To date, we've put in $1.6 billion and we think it's going to take another $150 million to get the job done in the last two countries," he said.

Challenges in Afghanistan and Pakistan include "political insecurity, highly mobile populations, difficult terrain, and, in some instances, logistical barriers," states Rotary International.

Rotary International helped found Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which involves the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rotary says it has committed to raising $50 million each year for the effort and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged to contribute $150 million each year. The funds are intended to help with operational support, medical works, lab equipment and educational materials.

Marty Cohn, show host and member of Brattleboro Rotary Club, said polio cases have dropped by 99.9 percent — going from 350,000 cases in 1988 in 125 countries to 33 cases of wild poliovirus in 2018 in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"We're talking about eradicating polio," he told the Reformer. "That would be the second disease to be wiped out after smallpox."

(CNN)Tiger Woods added another layer of history to a remarkable year when he won his record-equaling 82nd PGA Tour title at the Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan.The Masters champion is now tied with legendary golfer Sam Snead, who won 82 titles throughout his more than 50-year career.

A woman died from an explosion at a gender reveal party

(CNN)A woman has died after an explosion at a gender reveal party in Iowa, authorities say.

The 56-year-old woman, unnamed by authorities, was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday in the city of Knoxville, according to a press release from the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

The subsequent investigation found "a gender reveal announcement resulted in the explosion" -- and the woman was struck by a flying piece of debris, according to the press release.

(CNN)Former NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal, 47, is in mourning after his sister, Ayesha Harrison-Jex, died after battling cancer.

O'Neal was scheduled to host an event at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama, but had to cancel due to the death of his sister, according to the school.

O'Neal, who is a host on TNT's "Inside the NBA," was absent from Thursday night's episode, and his co-hosts addressed O'Neal's absence.

The long General Motors strike is finally over, as workers approve labor deal

New York (CNN Business)The long General Motors strike is finally over, as members of the United Auto Workers union voted in favor of a four-year labor deal to end the walkout.

The rank-and-file members voted 57% in favor of the deal, according to the union. The labor contract was reached between union and company negotiators on Oct. 16, but strikers remained on the picket lines until it was ratified.

GM plants will resume work as soon as possible, with some workers returning over the weekend and others on Monday, according to two company sources familiar with plans.

The strike by nearly 50,000 hourly GM workers started Sept. 16, nearly six weeks ago. It is the largest against a US business since the last GM strike 12 years ago. But that strike was over in less than three days. This strike is the longest auto industry work stoppage in more than 20 years, and the longest nationwide auto strike in 50 years. GM has lost about $1.75 billion due to the walkout, according to an estimate from Anderson Economic Group, a Michigan research firm.

Washington (CNN)Retired NBA superstar Charles Barkley had harsh words for Mike Pence on Thursday after the vice president accused the league of acting as a "wholly owned subsidiary" of China.

The league has been scrutinized over its business relationship with China after Daryl Morey, the general manager of the Houston Rockets, tweeted his support for the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. Morey quickly apologized and deleted his original tweet, but the league's Chinese partners suspended ties, state broadcaster CCTV halted all broadcasts of preseason games, and the Chinese government said the NBA needed to show "mutual respect." China did not air the Rockets' season opener on Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The controversy has led to accusations that the NBA is prioritizing business interests over American values, but Barkley pointed out that the US and others do business in China regardless.

One injured in shooting at Santa Rosa high school in California, police say

(CNN)One person was injured in a shooting at Ridgway High School in Santa Rosa, California, on Tuesday, according to Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Summer Gloeckner.

This does not appear to be a mass shooting incident, Gloeckner said, and police called it an "isolated shooting." Detectives are talking to the victim as the investigation continues.

The possible suspect was detained, and the search for the weapon is ongoing, police said on Twitter.

Ridgway High School, Santa Rosa High and Santa Rosa Junior College are on lockdown while police investigate, Santa Rosa Police said.
