NAIROBI — Just past midnight Tuesday morning, on Kenya’s fourth night under a coronavirus curfew, the country’s covid-19 death toll stood at one, but the toll of an accompanying police crackdown ticked up to two.
That’s when Yassin Hussein Moyo, 13, bled to death.

He had been standing on his third-floor balcony in a shantytown in Nairobi, watching police storm the neighborhood, using their batons to beat people who refused to abide by the curfew, when a police bullet struck him in the stomach.

Like many other African countries, Kenya has imposed sweeping restrictions on movement to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. The curfew, which requires people to stay in their homes from dusk to dawn, is the most stringent limitation and has led to a wave of police violence.

Michigan state lawmaker dies; coronavirus suspected

state lawmaker in Michigan is suspected to have died of the coronavirus Sunday after being taken to the hospital for breathing problems, according to his mother.
The Associated Press reported that 44-year-old Michigan state Rep. Isaac Robinson's mother, former state Rep. Rose Mary C. Robinson, announced her son's death Sunday, which she suspected to be related to the coronavirus due to the nature of his symptoms.
"I called EMS, they took him to Receiving at 6 a.m. and he was dead by 11," the elder Robinson told Crain's Detroit, a local news publication, on Sunday.
Robinson, a Detroit Democrat, had apparently been suffering from coronavirus symptoms for days but initially refused to go to the hospital, according to his mother.
“He wouldn’t go to the hospital. I kept insisting the last three days,” she said, according to Crain's Detroit. “I kept saying, ‘You should go to the doctor, go to the hospital.’ Of course, he resisted.”
Most people can overcome coronavirus symptoms without being treated in a hospital. But in some patients, especially those with pre-existing health conditions and older patients, can experience severe respiratory complications that can lead to death.
"Rep. Isaac Robinson had a huge heart, a quick wit, and a genuine passion for the people," Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said of Robinson in a Sunday statement. "I am very sad to hear of his passing. He was a fierce advocate for Detroiters and people across Southeast Michigan. He dedicated his career to ensuring justice and security for those he served, and the impact he had on his community will continue to be felt for years to come."

NJ gov slams 47-person 'corona party' after earlier warning against gatherings: 'This is not a game'

You don’t have a right to party in New Jersey, according to Gov. Phil Murphy -- at least not during the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
Police in Ewing Township on Friday shut down a gathering of 47 people -- DJ included -- who were crammed into a 550-square-foot apartment in defiance of a stay-at-home order meant to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Ewing Township sits on the Delaware River across the border from Pennsylvania, northeast of Philadelphia.
“The organizer was charged, as they should have been and deserved to be,” Murphy wrote on Twitter. “This is not a game. Stay home. Be smart.”
Ewing police said in a statement that officers issued two summonses to the host, 47-year-old Wade Jackson, who allegedly described the gathering as a “Corona Party.”

Joseph Lowery, civil rights leader, dies at 98

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN)The Rev. Joseph Lowery, a leader in America's civil rights movement, died Friday.
He was 98.
Lowery's death was confirmed by family representative Imara Canady, who said he died of natural causes.
Often called the "dean" of the civil rights movement, he worked hand in hand in the movement's formative years with the Revs. Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesse Jackson.
He once said he missed "Martin" and other civil rights activists who had died before him. But he felt that God was keeping him for a single cause: To address the injustices of the criminal justice system, particularly toward poor black men.
"It's the last facet here of racial oppression," Lowery once said of the American criminal justice system.
