30 million Americans have filed initial unemployment claims since mid-March

New York (CNN Business)Millions more Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, as the coronavirus crisis continued to weigh on the US economy.
First-time claims for unemployment benefits totaled 3.8 million in the week ending April 25, after factoring in seasonal adjustments, the US Department of Labor said.
Without those adjustments — which economists use to account for seasonal hiring fluctuations — the raw number was 3.5 million.
That brings the total number of first-time claims to 30.3 million over the past six weeks — representing roughly 18.6% of the US labor force — as businesses have laid off and furloughed workers during stay-at-home orders across the country
After peaking at 6.9 million in the last week of March, claims have fallen each of the last four weeks — an encouraging sign that at least things aren't getting worse.
But overall, joblessness remains a dire problem. Friday marks May 1, and for millions of Americans, rents and mortgage payments will be due. Unemployment benefits are one of the key forms of financial aid that are helping families plug the gap.

Maryland mandates 'universal testing' for all nursing home residents, staff

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced Wednesday the state would implement “universal testing” for all nursing home residents and staff whether or not they show symptoms for the coronavirus
Hogan, a Republican, issued the executive order to target the “most acute outbreaks, clusters and hot spots of coronavirus,” he said in his daily COVID-19 press briefing.
The governor tasked Col. Eric Alaly, the state surgeon of the Maryland National Guard, to enforce all safety rules at long-term care facilities across the state.

More than 70 percent of federal prisoners tested nationwide for coronavirus were positive; LA lockup has worst outbreak

More than 70 percent of the inmates incarcerated at federal prisons who’ve been tested for the coronavirusreceived a positive result, according to a report published Wednesday.
The federal Bureau of Prisons’ latest figures show that out of the 2,700 tests performed systemwide, nearly 2,000 have come back positive, strongly suggesting there are more COVID-19 cases left uncovered, according to The Associated Press.
Advocates have called for more widespread testing at facilities, airing the possibility that far more inmates may be infected. As of Wednesday, at least 31 federal inmates have died from the coronavirus since late March. About 600 have recovered.

Ex-Jaguars LB Telvin Smith Arrested, Charged with Unlawful Sexual Activity

Linebacker Telvin Smith has been arrested in Jacksonville and charged with unlawful sexual activity with certain minors, according to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office records (via ESPN's Michael DiRocco).
Smith's status in the NFL has been up in the air since last May's announcement that he would not play football in 2019 and instead "get his world in order."
The former Jaguars star was booked into Duval County Jail at 5:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday with bail set at $50,003.
The Jaguars placed Smith on the team's reserve/retired list last July, which would allow him to rejoin the team should he file for reinstatement after taking a sabbatical. According to an Instagram post from Smith in January, the linebacker turned down "a few" offers to return to the field, adding later that he was trying to "get this right" for his kids.

Former Red Sox star Manny Ramirez, 47, eyes baseball return in Taiwan

Manny Ramirez says he still misses stepping into the batter's box and wants to return to professional baseball.
The former MLB superstar, who will turn 48 in May, has his sights set on the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan, where he briefly played in 2013.
In an interview published Wednesday by the Taiwan Times, Ramirez told the newspaper that he hopes to land a roster spot this year in the CPBL.
The five-team CPBL has attracted worldwide attention in recent months as the first major professional baseball league to start its 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Ramirez told the Times that his return to the CPBL would further help the league, citing a boost in attendance during his 2013 debut season.
He said he has had offers to play in the independent Atlantic League but would prefer to play in Taiwan. The 12-time All-Star told the Times he is confident that he will eventually get the opportunity to play in the CPBL.
Ramirez appeared in 49 games with the CPBL's EDL Rhinos in 2013 before leaving the club and returning to the United States. He batted .352 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs.
He played 19 seasons in the major leagues and was named MVP of the 2004 World Series, when the Boston Red Sox won their first title since 1918. His last major league appearance was with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011.
Ramirez was suspended 50 games early in 2009 with the Los Angeles Dodgersafter testing positive for a banned female fertility drug popular among steroid users. He retired in 2011 after testing positive for elevated testosterone.
The CPBL started its season April 11 but is barring spectators over concerns of spreading the coronavirus in a crowded space.
League officials delayed the season twice from its originally scheduled opening day on March 14 and only started competition after close consultation with the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
