Whitingham woman ID'd in fatal crash

WHITINGHAM — A 66-year-old woman from Whitingham was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash early Wednesday night.

The Vermont State Police responded to the crash at about 4:54 p.m., according to a news release. Police said investigation of the scene and witness statements indicated Jean Ellis had been traveling north on Route 112 in a 2012 Mini Cooper by the residence of 195 Route 112 when she failed to navigate "a moderate left hand turn" for an unknown reason.

The vehicle kept going straight, traveling off the right hand side of the road, overturning as it went down a 10-foot retaining wall along a creek, according to the news release. It landed on its roof in shallow water.

Police said there were no marks in the roadway to indicate braking.

Sgt. Ryan Wood of the State Police told the Reformer drugs and alcohol are not believed to be involved. He suggested the crash could have occurred from "possible inattention or most likely a medical event."

Redskins Fire Jay Gruden After 0-5 Start, Bill Callahan to Be Interim HC

Washington fired head coach Jay Gruden on Monday following a 0-5 start to the 2019 season. "Gruden was informed of the decision early Monday morning by Owner Daniel Snyder and President Bruce Allen," the team announced.

The club added:

"Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility. Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond."

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport first reported that Bill Callahan, who has been serving as the offensive line coach and an assistant head coach, will take over the head coaching duties on an interim basis. Callahan previously served as the Oakland Raiders' head coach in 2002 and 2003.

'Joker' shatters box office records despite its controversial depiction of violence

New York (CNN Business)"Joker" broke box office records this weekend, even as its controversial depiction of violence made some potential theatergoers anxious. 

The gritty Warner Bros. film about the origins of the crazed Batman nemesis brought in an estimated $93.5 million in North America this weekend. That makes "Joker" the highest-grossing opening in the history of October. The film shattered the record held by Sony Pictures' "Venom," which made $80 million last October. 

"Joker" is the largest opening for Warner Bros. this year as well as one of the biggest openings for a R-rated film. It made $234 million worldwide.

The film, which comes from the Warner Bros.' lucrative DC Entertainment brand, has been one of the most talked-about movies of the year. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joker, a troubled man who turns into a killer.

4 homeless men killed in New York, apparently while they slept, police say

(CNN)Four homeless men in Manhattan have been killed -- and a fifth injured -- in what investigators believe were attacks that began while they were sleeping, New York City police said Saturday.

A suspect -- a 24-year-old man who investigators believe also is homeless -- is in custody, New York police Detective Annette Shelton said.

Investigators believe the victims, found early Saturday in at least three locations in or near Lower Manhattan, were hit with a metal object as they slept, Shelton said.

Police were scouring the crime scenes Saturday morning. Details about what led to the attacks weren't immediately available.

The grisly discoveries began around 2 a.m., when a man's body and an 49-year-old injured man were found in or near a building in Manhattan's Chinatown neighborhood, according to police.

The injured man was taken to a Manhattan hospital in critical condition, Shelton said
