Someone put up a Nazi flag at a Michigan elementary school

(CNN)Police in Battle Creek, Michigan, are investigating after a Nazi flag was found flying at an elementary school.

The flag was discovered Saturday when construction workers arrived at Riverside Elementary School and noticed that the American flag in front of the school had been replaced by a Nazi banner.

Sometime during the night, school officials say, someone broke the lock on the flagpole and swapped them.

"It is disturbing that an individual would use school grounds as a platform to promote such beliefs," Lakeview School District Superintendent Blake Prewitt said in a statement obtained by CNN. "Our story as a district is so much more than this."

The Battle Creek Police Department was notified about the incident on Monday.

When authorities received the flag, Police Chief Jim Blocker said, it had already been handled by a number of people. The school, because it was under construction, did not have working video surveillance equipment at the time.

The chief said he knows it's going to be hard to prove that a person or group did it, but the entire department is committed to finding who is responsible.

"It's enough to deserve our attention and to send a message that it's not appreciated and we'll actively go after you," Blocker told CNN by phone.

Authorities say they're giving the case extra attention to send a message: Hate has no home here.

Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram exits Saturday with head injury

OKLAHOMA CITY -- New Orleans Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram left Saturday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder midway through the second quarter with a head injury and did not return.

Ingram apparently was struck in the head at some point during play and asked the bench for a sub. At the first dead ball, Ingram checked out of the game and went directly into the locker room and remained there for the rest of the game.

Ingram's specific injury wasn't initially clear, with the team saying he was still being "evaluated" some 30 minutes after the game.

"I haven't seen it at all," coach Alvin Gentry said. "Just got hit in the head, that's it."

Ingram, 22, had seven points and four rebounds in 13 minutes before checking out. Without Ingram, the Pelicans struggled to score in the second half, putting up just 44 points in the final 24 minutes -- including 18 in the fourth quarter -- in a 115-104 loss to the Thunder.

German city of Dresden declares 'Nazi emergency'

(CNN)The German city of Dresden has declared a "Nazi emergency" after years of "right-wing extremist, racist" activity in the city, a local councilor says.

Dresden city councilors this week passed a resolution warning that the far-right was growing in strength in the eastern German city.

"The word 'Nazinotstand' is an exaggerated formulation for the fact that there is a serious problem -- similar to the climate emergency -- with right-wing extremism right up to the middle of society," Max Aschenbach, councilor for the satirist Die Partei (The Party), told CNN.

Aschenbach, who tabled the motion, told CNN the move was symbolic and would have no legal consequences, but that it served to highlight the threat posed by the far right in Dresden.

Dresden is where the the PEGIDA movement (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West) first emerged in 2013, and regular rallies are still held in the city.

Anti-immigrant sentiment runs high in the state of Saxony, of which Dresden is the capital: The Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) won 27.5% of the vote in this year's state election.

Wind and rain dislodge boat trapped on rocks above Niagara Falls for 101 years

(CNN)A boat stuck on rocks above Niagara Falls for more than a century has been unmoored by high wind and heavy rains.

Thursday's harsh weather pushed the vessel away from its rocky perch and closer to the falls on the Canadian side, according to the Niagara Parks Commission.

It's the first time it's moved any appreciable distance for more than a century, according to CNN affiliate CBC.

In a video produced by Niagara Parks Commission on Friday, an official, Jim Hill, said the barge, while not currently moving, appears to have "flipped on its side and spun around."

Transformer fire causes widespread outages

BRATTLEBORO — Nearly 7,000 Green Mountain Power customers were without electricity starting around 10:25 on Friday morning after a power transformer on Putney Road caught fire.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the fire, but GMP technicians on scene didn't believe it had anything to do with the scattered outages around Windham County due to heavy wind.

However, noted Brattleboro Fire Chief, the fire in the transformer located just south of the Veterans Memorial Bridge on Route 5 was probably made worse by the intensity of the wind.

"When we arrived, the cabinet was fully involved in fire with heavy black smoke," he said.

Bucossi noted he and his firefighters could also hear the sound of electricity surging during the fire.

"There's a lot of electricity going through here," he said.

The substation is one of two large substations in Brattleboro, with the other being on Cotton Mill Hill.

Power was slowly returned to various parts of town by about 2 p.m. by rerouting power through other substations. Technicians said they didn't know how long it will take to replace the burned-out transformer.
