Pelicans' Zion Williamson Underwent Surgery on Knee Injury, Will Miss 6-8 Weeks

New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson underwent surgery to repair a torn right meniscus Monday and will miss the next six to eight weeks.  

The Pelicans confirmed the procedure ahead of Tuesday's season opener against the Toronto Raptors.

Williamson has dealt with his share of injuries since the Pelicans selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in June. He left his summer-league debut in July after nine minutes with a bruised left knee, but it wasn't considered a serious issue. 

Things got more serious prior to New Orleans' preseason finale on Oct. 18 against the New York Knicks. Williamson was ruled out of the contest with right knee soreness, and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the former Duke star would miss "a period of weeks" to open the regular season

Original ESPN anchor Lou Palmer dies at age 83

Lou Palmer, ESPN's original on-air commentator, died Friday in Wellington, Florida. He was 83.

Palmer's death was confirmed by his daughter, Patty Puma-Conrad. She said he died after a battle with lung cancer.

Palmer was hired by ESPN in 1978, a year before the network officially was launched. He teamed with longtime WTIC Radio colleague Arnold Dean to broadcast ESPN's first live event in October 1978 -- a "demonstration" feed of a basketball game between the University of Connecticut and Athletes in Action -- for cable executives, according to the network's founder, Bill Rasmussen.

Palmer also served as an original anchor and reporter for the network's flagship "SportsCenter" shows. He remained at ESPN until 1985.

Eric Cooper, MLB umpire for 21 years, dies at 52

Eric Cooper, a Major League Baseball umpire who worked the American League Division Series two weeks ago, has died. He was 52.

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Cooper's death Sunday.

Cooper died after having a blood clot. He had knee surgery earlier in the week and was recuperating at his father's home in Iowa. Popular with his fellow umps, he spoke with some of them Saturday about his recovery.

Cooper made his debut in the majors in 1996 as a minor league fill-in and joined the big league staff in 1999.

His most recent assignment came in the playoffs this month when he worked the New York Yankees' sweep of Minnesota in the ALDS. He was at second base on Oct. 7 for the clinching Game 3 at Target Field.

Nancy Pelosi's brother and former Baltimore Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro III has died

and brother of Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has died.

"My husband Paul and our entire family are devastated by the loss of our patriarch, my beloved brother, Thomas D'Alesandro III," Pelosi said Sunday in a statement released by her office. "Tommy was the finest public servant I have ever known."

The Baltimore Sun reported D'Alesandro, who served as Baltimore's mayor from 1967 to 1971, died Sunday at his Baltimore home after complications of a stroke. He was 90.

Johnson & Johnson recalls baby powder due to asbestos concerns

CNN)Johnson & Johnson announced on Friday that it's initiating a voluntary recall in the United States of its popular Johnson's Baby Powder due to low levels of asbestos contamination.

The recall, which is limited to one lot of baby powder bottles produced and shipped in the United States last year, comes in response to a US Food and Drug Administration test that found levels of chrysotile asbestos contamination in samples from a bottle purchased online, according to the company.

"I understand today's recall may be concerning to all those individuals who may have used the affected lot of baby powder," Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Ned Sharpless said in a statement on Friday. "I want to assure everyone that the agency takes these concerns seriously and that we are committed to our mandate of protecting the public health."

(CNN)An African American security guard told a student to stop calling him the n-word. It cost him his job.

Marlon Anderson was a security guard at Madison West High School in Wisconsin. Last Wednesday, he was called in to help the assistant principal escort a student from school grounds, he told CNN.

The student was resisting, including yelling and pushing the principal. Anderson called for backup, and the student started yelling expletives at him, including the racial slur, Anderson said.

At first, Anderson said he asked the student to stop calling him that, without saying the word. But the student continued to call him different variations of the word.

Finally, Anderson said he responded: "Don't call me (n-word)."

That's the comment that got him fired.

Chicago teachers' strike stretches into second day as negotiations continue

CNN)Some 300,000 Chicago schoolchildren are out of class for the second day in a row Friday, as negotiations continue between the city and thousands of striking educators.

A senior city official told CNN on Thursday the two sides are "still pretty far apart" and the strike probably will go through the weekend.

"We understand that's hard for parents," Jesse Sharkey, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, told reporters Friday morning. "But it's a short-term disruption for what we hope is a long-term commitment to educational justice in this city."

Bargaining team members spent at least 10 hours at the table on Thursday, according to union Chief of Staff Jennifer Johnson.

"It was moving, but not nearly enough," she said in a news conference Thursday night.
